For the next couple of weeks, I’ll be sharing in-depth travel guides from all of the cities we explored in Italy. While Positano was actually the last leg of our Italian journey, it was the most highly requested post, so here we go!
Our itinerary went something like this… Rome –> Tuscany –> Positano –> Rome
Looking at our itinerary you can probably tell we flew in and out of Rome and did lots of traveling in between. Today I’ll be highlighting a few of our favorite spots and things to do while visiting Positano on the Amalfi Coast.
I’m sure you’ve seen this magical place on your Instagram feed or while scrolling through Pinterest, and it’s for good reason! It’s one of those destinations where you feel like you’re dreaming because everything is just so picture perfect (and trust me, the photos don’t even do it justice!).
HOW TO GET TO POSITANO:
There are only two ways to get in and out of Positano, by car or by ferry. We opted for a private driver that we reserved through ItaliaDeals who picked us up directly outside of the train station in Naples. We took a train from Florence to Naples and then the car ride from Naples to Positano was approximately an hour and a half. But you guys, once you hit the Mediterranean Sea the views are absolutely breathtaking so the drive actually flies by.
*Tip: Don’t even think about renting a car and driving it yourself. There is one one-way road that goes through Positano and you definitely don’t want to be on the road with the locals and/or have to park!
WHERE TO STAY:
Since we waited a little too long to book our lodging, we weren’t left with many options. We ended up staying at a 3-star hotel, Hotel Vittoria, which is located towards the top of the hill. It wasn’t a bad place to stay, but next time we visit we’ll definitely book somewhere towards the middle or bottom of the city like Hotel Poseidon or Le Sirenuse Hotel. Since Positano is built on the side of a mountain, that’s one major thing to keep in mind when booking a place to stay. For instance, the City Center and beach are all located towards the bottom of the hill, so if you are staying at the top of the hill it means lots and lots of walking!
WHAT TO DO:
1. Walk to the City Center and shop! Positano has tons of shops that have everything from plateware to clothing to souvenirs. Numerous shops will actually make custom shoes for you, so if you are in the market for a comfortable pair of sandals, definitely do it. Such a fun and a one-of-a-kind experience!
2. Spend the day at the world-famous beach, Spiaggia Grande! There’s also a more private and less crowded beach that’s walking distance called Fornillo Beach. It’s equally as beautiful with not so many tourists!
3. Take a day trip to the island of Capri by boat.
4. Hike the Path of Gods. We, unfortunately, didn’t have enough time to experience the hike, but I’ve heard nothing but amazing reviews. The views are supposed to be like nothing you’ve ever seen before (hence the name). Definitely including it on our next trip to Positano!
WHERE TO EAT:
La Tagliata — hands down the best meal we had on our entire trip! Be sure to make a reservation early in advance because this place fills up quick. Since the restaurant sits on one of the highest points above Positano, they offer a complimentary shuttle that picks you up and takes you home after your meal which is so efficient and cost-effective. The views from this family-owned restaurant are unlike anything else we saw on our entire vacation. Absolutely beautiful! And the MEAL! You guys it’s so good! As a heads up, there is no menu whatsoever, your 4 to 5-course meal is based on what “mama” wants to prepare in the back. We were able to try everything from their house wine to hand-made ravioli and it was all spectacular. Highly recommend!
Caffe Positano — the perfect spot to enjoy lunch and overlook the entire town of Positano. While the food is delicious, the views make this place a must-see!
Hotel Poseidon Il Tridente — another spot with stunning views! I recommend eating dinner here and arriving just before sunset for an experience you won’t forget.
Franco’s Bar — Swing by this perfectly placed bar for pre-dinner drinks, you won’t be disappointed with the bar menu or views!
WHAT TO WEAR:
Dress for comfort! Comfortable shoes are an absolute must for the days when you’re out and about on the town. For reference, we were walking close to 15,000 steps each day! For warmer months, be sure to pack a swimsuit and breathable options to keep you cool throughout the day (linen dresses, tank tops, etc). A wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen are also must-haves. The average temperature, while we were there, was 73 degrees during the day and lower 60s at night, so we really lucked out!
Have you been to Positano before? If so, please leave your favorite spots in the comments below! And if you haven’t been to Positano, be sure to add it to your bucket list ASAP!
Thank you for stopping by and as always, reach out if you have any questions! xo
